Dutch family found after years ’waiting for end of time’ in farmhouse basement | World | News

Police found a man aged 58 and five young adults between the ages of 18 to 25 at the farm in the province of Drenthe, in the Netherlands. A hidden staircase was discovered behind a cupboard in the living room which led into a secret room where the family were living. Police said in a statement on Tuesday: “We found six people living in a small space in the house which could be locked but wasn’t a basement.”

Officers added they were not sure if the family were living there voluntarily or not.

The family also reportedly said the oldest man was the father of the five younger people.

He has now been arrested.

One of the children went into a bar in the nearby village of Ruinerwold to raise the alarm about the situation.

He ordered five beers and then told staff he needed help as he had “run away”, according to RTV Drenthe.

Bar owner Chris Westerbeek said: “Then I had a chat with him and he revealed he had run away and needed help… then we called the police.

“He had long hair, a dirty beard, wore old clothes and looked confused.

“He said he’d never been to school and hadn’t been to the barber for nine years.

He told Algemeen Dagblad news website: “It’s actually pretty strange, now I come to think about it.”

It not known how long the family had been in the basement or where the children’s mother is.

But local mayor Roger de Groot told reported she had died some time ago.

He added: “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
