Manchester Airport: Explosion heard as bomb squad swoop – train, tram and buses suspended | UK | News

Greater Manchester Police tweeted about the incident at 9.08am. A statement said: “Officers are currently responding to reports of a suspicious package at Manchester Airport Transport Interchange. “Further enquiries are being carried out and bomd disposal officers are on their way to assist with these enquiries.

“A man has been detained at the scene.”

A cordon is currently in place, with people being encourage to follow directions from officers.

The statement added: “Trams, trains and buses are currently suspended to and from the airport interchange.

“Thank you for your patience as we respond to this.”

One Twitter user posted at 9.36am: “At #Manchesterairport just heard an explosion. Hopefully a controlled one as seems to be suspect package found.”

Metrolink, which runs services to and from the airport, said: “Due to a police incident at Manchester Airport, services on the Manchester Airport line will only operate from Victoria – Wythenshawe town centre.”

A statement on the National Rail Enquiries website said: “The police are dealing with an incident at Manchester Airport, and this is causing disruption to trains at the station.

“Trains may be delayed by up to 30 minutes or cancelled until approximately 11:00.”

Amanda McFebden, who was trying to catch a train to Glasgow but was unable to access the station, said: “We were evacuated again. We are now at the airport terminal wondering what to do.

“There is a lot of people here – around 50 to 100.

“People are concerned they are not going places. Everyone is waiting and does not know what is going on.

“There is a lot of police at the there. There were three of four police cars, more have arrived now.

“I am about to miss my train home to Glasgow in 20 minutes.”
