Brexit news: Boris Johnson declares war on ‘failed’ Speaker John Bercow | Politics | News

The Business Secretary has revealed the Tories will field a candidate against Mr Bercow in his Buckingham constituency, despite this breaching long-standing convention. Ms Leadsom claimed Mr Bercow had “failed” in his role and had permitted a “flagrant abuse” of the parliamentary process. Ms Leadsom wrote in the Mail on Sunday that the Speaker’s role was to be “a politically impartial, independent umpire of proceedings”.

This is because he was given the role “to protect the constitution and oversee the behaviour of the House”.

But she added: “Last week, the current Speaker failed us.”

Her words come after MPs backed a motion to take control of the Commons timetable to pass legislation to block a no-deal Brexit.

The motion was then passed by the House of Lords on Friday.

Ms Leadsom said Mr Bercow had allowed MPs to use Standing Order Number 24.

This is a procedure used to trigger emergency debates as a means of taking over Parliament’s timetable.

She claimed that by doing this, Mr Bercow had not “just bent the rules, he has broken them”.

She said: “What we saw on Tuesday was a flagrant abuse of this process.

He said: “We cannot have a situation in which Parliament is shut down – we are a democratic society.

“Parliament will be heard and nobody is going to get away, as far as O am concerned, with stopping that happening.”

Ms Leadsom often rowed with Mr Bercow during her two years as Leader of the Commons.

In May last year, the Speaker allegedly called Ms Leadsom a “stupid woman”, as well as “f****** useless”.

This March, Mr Bercow reprimanded Ms Leadsom for using her mobile phone during Commons business.

But Ms Leadsom later accused the Speaker of failing to show MPs “courtesy and respect”.
