What Rafael Nadal said in Roger Federer pep talk to inspire Nick Kyrgios win at Laver Cup | Tennis | Sport

Roger Federer was a set down against Nick Kyrgios before Rafael Nadal stepped forward with a pep talk to inspire the comeback.

John Isner had levelled the Laver Cup for Team World earlier in the day after defeating Alexander Zverev for two crucial points.

And Kyrgios looked as though he would be on his way to adding two more points for Team World after taking the first set in the blockbuster match against Federer.

However, Federer found a breakthrough in the second set to force a 10-point match tiebreak before getting the win.

And it appeared Federer’s comeback may have been inspired by an intervention from Nadal.

A part of the conversation between the two is inaudible, but it’s clear Federer appreciated the sentiment from Nadal.

“You are winning more than him,” he said.

“Like 8-5 for you – I checked the numbers so the percentages are much better for you.

“I know it’s difficult because this guy hits the ball so well.”

And Federer took the information on board, responding by saying: “I need to be patient and then go… he’s a little bit too comfortable.”

Then Nadal leant over Federer’s shoulder to say: “Don’t worry, you can do this.”

Kyrgios looked to be in a comfortable position against Federer with no break at 4-5 in the second set.

Nadal though clearly sensed Federer was on the verge of finding a breakthrough and approached the Swiss tennis star’s chair for his words of advice.

And that clearly appeared to work as Federer did find the break just two games later.

Team Europe now lead Team World 5-3 going into the night session where Nadal will be in action twice.

The Spaniard will first take on Milos Raonic before joining forces with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the doubles to face Kyrgios and Jack Sock.
