Steven Gerrard makes admission in Rangers trophy hunt as Hearts await in League Cup clash | Football | Sport

Rangers take on Hearts in the League Cup semi-finals on Sunday as they look to set-up a clash with Old Firm rivals Celtic in the final.

Steven Gerrard failed to win a trophy in his first season with the Light Blues, and he is aware of the opportunity his side have in front of them.

The Liverpool legend went on to discuss why the same competition in England gave him a boost early on in his playing career, and why it could do the same for him as a manager.

He said: “The League Cup win was the catalyst. Certainly, from my point of view, it was my first taste of a real trophy.

“I’d won plenty coming through the amateurs and stuff like that. And at the time you think they’re the best trophies and the best achievements of your life.

“But when you get one for real — a major honour at that level of football — the taste and the feeling afterwards certainly drove me on.

“I’m sure it did that for many other players in the dressing room as we went on to have a wonderful season.”

The former England skipper is aware that fans are desperate for silverware after an extended major trophy drought, and knows that the first will be the most difficult.

He added: “So the first is always the hardest because of all the pressure and expectation.

“And I do think that getting to the Betfred Cup Final is important. If and when we do then we need to try to go all the way.

“But first things first, we need to do everything we can to overturn Hearts.”

Rangers take on Hearts at Hampden Park at 3:00 pm later today having won two games in a row, and Gerrard knows that the pressure is on.

He added: “The pressure is always there for the players and staff to deliver at Rangers.

“It has been the case for many years and I don’t think that will ever go away, it’s part of being at a big club.

“There’s two ways of looking at that – you can feel pressure on your shoulders every day and worry about it.

“Or you can use it as a driver – an inspiration and an opportunity to go and join the people who have built the club. That’s what drives me on every day.”
