Serena Williams: ‘The superior tennis player’ – Damning statement on Bianca Andreescu loss | Tennis | Sport

Bianca Andreescu was “so the superior tennis player” in her US Open women’s singles final win over Serena Williams, according to tennis broadcaster Catherine Whitaker.

Andreescu stunned Williams by beating her in straight sets on Saturday to land her first career Grand Slam title.

The Canadian was competing in the main draw of the US Open for the first time and won 6-3, 7-5 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After taking the first set relatively easily, Andreescu raced into a 5-1 lead in the second and had Championship point.

Williams, however, showed all her experience and fought back to level the set at 5-5.

But Andreescu still had enough in the tank to get over the line.

And Whitaker, speaking on the Tennis Podcast, says she never thought Andreescu was not going to win the match despite William’s comeback in the second set.

“On Championship point at 5-1 down Serena hit a forehand winner and that was her first winner of the set,” Whitaker said.

“And then she proceeded to win 16 of the next 20 points to get back to 5-5.

“I don’t know about you but at that point I was thinking ‘thank god Bianca Andreescu is human’ because I was starting to wonder if she actually would feel any nerves or tension.

“I really was questioning whether she would.

“The nerves and tension for [Williams] were alleviated somewhat because she had nothing to lose at that stage.

“So I put that reversal of momentum down entirely to pressure and tension on both sides of the net.

“It increased for Andreescu to a point she had never experienced before and it lifted from Serena a little bit.

“And yet, I don’t know about you, [but] I never really thought Andreescu wasn’t going to win it because she was so the superior tennis player.”
