Rafael Nadal: Man Utd ace David De Gea, Real Madrid hail 19th Grand Slam title at US Open | Tennis | Sport

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea says Rafael Nadal is from ‘another planet’ after the Spanish star win his 19th Grand Slam title.

Nadal withstood a stirring comeback from Daniil Medvedev to beat the Russian in five-sets on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It was Nadal’s fourth US Open title and the 19th Major of his decorated career.

And he is now just one Grand Slam behind Roger Federer in the all-time list.

In the immediate aftermath of the match, several sports stars past and present hailed Nadal’s stunning achievement.

Man Utd’s De Gea tweeted: “This guy is from another planet!”

Real Madrid wrote: “A legend with no limits! Congratulations on your great @usopen victory, @RafaelNadal!

“@RealMadrid is very proud to have you as an honorary member of our club.”

Injured tennis star Juan Martin del Potro added: “What a match guys!! Unforgettable fight @RafaelNadal @DaniilMedwed. Felicitaciones Rafa!! #usopen”

Rod Laver, who handed the trophy to Nadal, said: “Congratulations @RafaelNadal, a gutsy victory to claim your 19th Major, 4th @usopen crown and 2nd Slam title this year after the French.

“Stand tall friend, you are closing in, it was a privilege to present this trophy to you tonight.”

Tennis legend Billie Jean King: “One for the ages! Absolutely incredible #USOpen Men’s Singles Final with the indomitable @RafaelNadal winning his fourth US Open title. Congratulations, Rafa! #USOpenFinals.”

Former world No 4 James Blake said: “What a match. These guys are warriors.

“So cool to see the emotion from Rafa after. He still wants every win so bad. Incredible 2 weeks of tennis.”
