Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign specific midfielder in transfer window | Football | Sport

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign an experienced central midfielder during the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been left short in the middle of the park having failed to replace Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera.

Fellaini left Manchester United to pursue a new challenge in the Chinese Super League with Shandong Luneng Taishan after five-and-a-half years of service.

Herrera, meanwhile, joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after his contract at United expired.

As a result, the Red Devils have been left lacking.

Andreas Pereira, Fred and Paul Pogba have all struggled this season, while Scott McTominay has been the sole shining light.

And Bleacher Report say United want to sign an experienced midfielder this winter.

No names are mentioned but the Red Devils’ stance suggests Solskjaer wants to add more leadership to his side.

Toni Kroos has long been linked with a move and it has previously been claimed United would accept him for Pogba in January should Real Madrid come calling.

Bruno Fernandes was heavily tipped to join United back in the summer but ultimately stayed put.

And it remains to be seen who United are able to bring in, particularly with Solskjaer’s side currently stuck in a rut.

The Norwegian is also eyeing a striker, something he recently confirmed by saying: “We let Alexis and Romelu go, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that it’s a forward that next time we’re going to recruit – we’re looking for some creativity and goals.

Solskaer was unable to sign one in the close season – but feels United were right to allow Romelu Lukaku to join Inter Milan.

“There were strikers but they weren’t the ones we wanted,” he added.

“If we had the right one, we would have.

“It was time for Romelu to go. He knows that. He didn’t want to be here. What is the point in having players that don’t want to be here?

“And it’s no point getting players in that you’re not 100% sure about.

“When you get players in you need the right ones that are going to stay here for a longer period and that’s the long-term thinking we have to show. I cannot think: ‘I need a player because this is my reputation.’ No, it’s the club.”

United are next in action against Liverpool on October 20 after the international break.

The Red Devils drew 0-0 with their Merseyside rivals in the same fixture last season.
