Fans fume as Italy star sent off for horror dump tackle in South Africa World Cup clash | Rugby | Sport

Rugby fans were left wanting another red card after Andrea Lovotti was sent off for a horror dump tackle against South Africa.

Lovotti was shown red for a tip-tackle on Duane Vermeulen, though was not the only one involved in the challenge.

Italian team-mate Nicola Quaglio appeared to initiate the lift, though referee Wayne Barnes saw Lovotti as the main culprit.

Barnes was heard saying: “One [Lovotti] has got his leg in the air and then dropped him on his head. Blue One is the worst culprit of the two.”

The referee proceeded to show the prop the red card, though fans believed Quaglio was lucky to get away without punishment.

One said on social media: “That is 2 reds all day long”

Another agreed, writing: “Should’ve been double red. As blatant as it gets.”

And a third simply wrote: “Madness”

Another added: “Lucky not to be 2 reds there, defo should of been”

While one was thinking about South Africa ace Vermeulen: “F****** Hell, that could’ve easily broke his neck.”

And former Scotland captain Rory Lawson also acknowledged the severity of the tackle in commentary for BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra.

Lawson said: “It’s ugly, he is lucky he doesn’t actually come down on his head. It’s idiocy from Andrea Lovotti.”
